CFA Institute: Global Finance Training

Instructional design and development for onboarding, risk management, and talent development programs.

Global eLearning modules designed using Articulate Storyline and Rise.

Project Overview

  • Organization: CFA Institute
  • Industry: Financial Services
  • Project Type: Corporate eLearning
  • Tools: Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise
  • Audience: New hires and internal teams
  • My Role: Instructional Designer & eLearning Developer

My Role & Contributions

I served as the instructional designer and eLearning developer responsible for translating subject matter into structured, interactive learning experiences.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Partnering with learning program managers and SMEs to gather and validate technical content
  • Structuring learning objectives and module flow during storyboarding
  • Developing interactive modules in Articulate Storyline and Rise
  • Designing knowledge checks and scenario-based interactions
  • Managing iterative review cycles and incorporating stakeholder feedback
  • Preparing modules for SCORM publishing and LMS deployment

the challenge

CFA Institute required scalable onboarding and training modules to support employees working across global teams. Complex financial concepts and internal processes needed to be translated into clear, engaging digital learning experiences that could be accessed by a distributed workforce.

Training needed to be:

  • Accessible
  • Easy to navigate
  • Aligned with internal learning standards

Design Approach

To support learning across diverse teams and roles, I structured the modules using scenario-based learning and progressive content layers.

Key design considerations included:

  • Breaking complex concepts into digestible segments
  • Using interactive scenarios to reinforce understanding
  • Aligning content with onboarding milestones
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts to validate technical accuracy

Modules were designed to support both self-paced exploration and structured onboarding pathways.

Solution

The final learning modules were developed using Articulate Storyline and Rise to combine interactive learning activities and structured knowledge content.

The solution included:

  • Interactive knowledge checks
  • Scenario-based learning activities
  • Modular learning sections for easy navigation
  • Responsive design for accessibility across devices

Storyline was used for interactive scenarios and assessments, while Rise supported structured learning content and quick reference modules.

Storyboard & Content Architecture

Before development, module content was mapped through detailed storyboards outlining learning objectives, on-screen content, and planned learner interactions. This process translates complex subject matter into a clear instructional flow and allows stakeholders to review structure and accuracy prior to development.

Below is a representative example of the storyboard framework used to plan Rise lessons and Storyline interactions.

Sample storyboard recreated for portfolio demonstration. Content has been generalized from a risk management training scenario.

Interaction Development

Iterative development of a scenario-based drag-and-drop interaction built in Articulate Storyline using the Bow Tie risk analysis framework.

Prototype Interaction (v0.01)

  • Early prototype of a scenario-based interaction built in Articulate Storyline.
  • This version focused on structuring the drag-and-drop mechanics and mapping the Bow-tie analysis model.

Refined Interaction (v0.03)

  • Iteration of the interaction after refining visual hierarchy, trigger logic, and drag-and-drop behavior.
  • Adjustments improved clarity for learners while aligning the interaction with the module's instructional objectives.

Learning Development Framework

To support scalable training delivery, I developed an operating model that clarifies how learning projects move from intake through deployment. The model helps teams forecast timelines, manage interaction complexity, and align stakeholders across development phases.

Outcome

The resulting modules supported CFA Institute’s onboarding and professional development initiatives by delivering scalable, accessible learning experiences for global teams.

The learning design enabled complex financial concepts and organizational processes to be presented through scenario-based interactions and modular lessons that could scale across global teams.
